Introduction to Low-Dose Immunotherapy

Dr Jean Monro / Breakspear Medical

XX.XX.2020 - CANCELLED AWAITING NEW DATE

BSEM is offering a workshop in collaboration with Breakspear Medical. Introduction to Low-Dose Immunotherapy.

The technique of low-dose immunotherapy employs intradermal skin tests of sequentially lower concentrations of antigens until a wheal response that does not increase in size is obtained. This concentration of the antigen can then safely be used in regular low-dose desensitisation treatment.

It is generally believed that an antigen is a substance that can cause an immune response, resulting in the production of an antibody, which neutralises the antigen in the body. The antigens are usually foreign proteins not found naturally in the body. The first step in using low-dose immunotherapy (also known as the provocation/neutralisation technique) is to challenge the body. The second step of the technique is maintenance by continuing to neutralise the allergic reactions by the repetitive injection of antigen vaccines.

The technique originated in the United States and is used by over 3,000 doctors worldwide. An estimated 30 million patients have been treated without significant adverse effects. It is successful in managing patients who cannot tolerate, or are not helped by, standard suppressive allergy therapy, and those in whom specific drug therapy is relatively contraindicated (e.g. steroid therapy in a patient with osteoporosis).

Breakspear Medical offers antigen vaccines for over 500 different kinds of food and other allergens and has the only Manufacturer’s ‘Specials’ License laboratory in the United Kingdom producing these custom-made, unpreserved antigens.

The workshop will start at 9am – please be aware that parking at the venue is limited. There is a car park nearby (Marlowes Shopping Centre) – cost of parking for the day approx. £5  Parking location found here

The cost for the workshop is £85 per person. Tea and coffee will be provided at break times; please be aware that there is no lunch included in the price of the workshop.
