Training Day 9 - Immunology

"Spotlight on Allergies and Intolerances"

Friday 18 June 2021 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM BST

The next training day is the second round of our modular training, starting with the topic of allergies. This time, the day is being held in honour of the late Professor Jonathan Brostoff who left us last year.  Jonathan was unique in being not only a great clinician and academic, but also a trailblazer in the field of allergy. His lifetime’s endeavour was to broaden the concept and the minds of those involved with patients with allergy and intolerances.

Given the superb feedback on our most recent training day, Spotlight on the Heart, we are offering training in the same hybrid format, in person at the Hallam Conference Centre or on-line.

The day starts with an in depth introduction by Dr Apelles Econs on the subject followed by diagnostic principles in modern allergy management. Dr Jerry Thompson will walk us through how he has incorporated principles of Ecological medicine as as a clinician and as a scientist to allergy and intolerances into GP practice.

The second session is presented by Drs Shideh Pouria, Damien Downing and Apelles Econs on various modes of intervention: including elimination diets, nutrition and immunotherapies including SCIT, SLIT, EPD,  LDI and  MIT.

The ever-popular afternoon of case presentations and Q&A by Trainees before the BSEM Panel of speakers will be back. This section aims to arm you with diagnostic techniques and treatments that can be immediately utilised in your practice. Current trainees may submit their cases in advance HERE.

Finally, our star guest speaker is none other than Professor Stephen Challacombe, Martin Rushton Professor of Oral Medicine at King’s College London. Apart from a stellar career in allergy, oral medicine and mucosal immunology, he has been a lifelong collaborator of Jonathan Brostoff with their work culminating in two editions of Food Allergy and Intolerance. There cannot be a more fitting end to the day and tribute to Jonathan. No doubt, as we have experienced in his other appearances at BSEM conferences, his talk will be illuminating, thought provoking and dotted with many interesting ideas stemming from his vast experience as a clinician, scientist.

The day will be followed by BSEM's AGM.  Streaming member delegates will be able to access the link to join the meeting here.
